Top Shows Coming to Town for 12/4/15-12/10/15

Alright, let’s do this. Nothing super huge this week, but there’s some cool stuff coming through anyway. It’s the holiday season, so we’ll be seeing a lot of Christmas shows and a shortage of actual tours. In case you forgot or haven’t heard, Leon Bridges will be on Saturday Night Live this weekend. Anyways, let’s get to it.

1 How the Edge Stole Christmas @ Verizon Theatre (Grand Prairie) Weds 12/9/15

Icelandic Folk-rockers Of Monsters and Men headline the annual event that includes Sublime (minus the important part), Panic! at the Disco (who will spend half the show telling you the name of the song coming up), the Neighbourhood, the Struts, and Atlas Genius (if there are posters for Atlas Genius, someone grab one for my wifey, the Geography teacher).

2 Jeff the Brotherhood/Diarrhea Planet @ Dada Dallas (Deep Ellum) Fri 12/4/15

A double headlining bill of epic proportions. This should be a rocking good time. That’s not even to mention, there are a few local faves on the bill too, Sealion, War Party and Psycho Magic. Sweeeet!

3 King Diamond w/ Exodus @ House of Blues (Dallas) Sat 12/5/15

Danish Heavy Metal legends, King Diamond, are back again after a successful run of dates in 2014.

4 Dallas Observer Music Awards Showcase 2015 @ Deep Ellum Sat 12/5/15

So, this will be pretty much everyone in town playing a set in Deep Ellum. 40+ bands across 9 venues in Deep Ellum. This year’s event includes Wesley Geiger, the Outfit, TX, Ishi, LEV, Lord Byron, Yells at Eels, Rahim Quazi, Le Cure, Justin Pinckard, Pearl Earl, Charley Crockett, Oil Boom, Rat Rios, Blue, the Misfit, the Boombachs, In Memory of Man, Bad Mountain, Claire Morales, Buffalo Black, Vandoliers, the Azalea Project, Kaela Sinclair, and Party Static, amongst others.

5 Daniel Markham w/ Siamese @ Sundown at Granada (Lower Greenville) Fri 12/4/15

This might be the highest rated local show by anyone not named Leon in the history of this list. Product of a slow week, perhaps, but either way, if you’re in Dallas, and haven’t gotten a chance to catch the talented Denton rocker, you might want to get out to this. Also, I just talked to him here.

6 Great White/Slaughter/LA Guns @ Bomb Factory (Deep Ellum) Fri 12/4/15

The Eagle’s Hair Metal Holiday concert brings a nice batch of has-beens, that apparently packs enough has-been power to make the list. Also featuring Dangerous Toys, Generator, and Supernova Remnant.

7 Pokey LaFarge w/ Deslondes @ the Loft (Dallas) Weds 12/9/15

Another of those old school sounding groups, I hear they’re supposed to be a lot of fun live. Also, I like the Loft.

8 Dance Gavin Dance w/ A Lot Like Birds, Dayshell and Strawberry Girls  @ Bomb Factory (Deep Ellum) Fri 12/4/15

Let’s rock the F out with Sacramento post-hardcore group, Dance Gavin Dance.

9 Marcia Ball w/ Daphne Willis @ the Kessler (Oak Cliff) Fri 12/4/15

Another week, another legendary Texas artist at the Kessler. Jeff Liles just keeps churning them out.

10 Jojo @ Dada Dallas (Deep Ellum) Sun 12/6/15

The former teen star, still just 24, is all grown up and in town playing to a sold out crowd in Deep Ellum.

Top Shows Coming to Town for 11/20/15-11/26/15

I didn’t update the calendar this week, so I hope I’m not missing anything major. Got some more venues I need to add next time I do update. Again, if I missed your show, let me know, I’m happy to add it. Anyways, here we go. I had Gwar on the list for a second, but with no more Oderus Urungus, so…..

1 Metric w/ Sarah Jaffe & Hibou @ Bomb Factory (Deep Ellum) Fri 11/20/15

Emily Haines and the Toronto indie darlings are headed your way, after a recent pass through opening for Imagine Dragons.

2 GZA @ Trees (Deep Ellum) Fri 11/20/15

Gary Grice, AKA GZA, AKA the Genius, AKA the mastermind behind the Wu Tang Clan.

3 Bone, Thugs n Harmony @ Bomb Factory (Deep Ellum) Sat 11/21/15

And while we’re on the subject of throwback hip hop groups….

4 JD McPherson w/ Parker Millsap @ Granada Theater (Lower Greenville) Fri 11/20/15

JD McPherson is an old soul from Oklahoma. His latest album, Let the Good Times Roll, takes cues from Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and dozens of other old school touchstones of rock n’ roll.

5 Rhett Miller @ Gas Monkey Live (Dallas) Sat 11/21/15

I believe this is the Old 97’s frontman’s annual fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis.

6 Mark Kozelek @ Sons of Hermann Hall (Deep Ellum) Sat 11/21/15

Sun Kil Moon vocalist and guy that Run the Jewels hate, Mark Kozelek, everyone.

7 Blue Healer w/ Jacob Furr @ Sundown at Granada (Lower Greenville) Fri 11/20/15

Blue Healer is a pretty great emerging band out of Austin (members formerly of Sons of Fathers). They were just in Fort Worth supporting Heartless Bastards, but now they’re back for a headlining show on the roof with local favorite, Jacob Furr.

8 the Stone Foxes w/ Vodeo @ Magnolia Motor Lounge (Fort Worth) Sun 11/22/15

The Stone Foxes are a pretty rockin’ bluesy band out of San Francisco. Locals Vodeo (formerly Shake the Moon), who you may be knowing better soon (wink), lend support.

9 James Bay @ House of Blues (Dallas) Mon 11/23/15

the 25 year old British singer swept to popularity with his single “Hold Back the River”, although I thought his commercially successful record, released in March, was kind of disappointing.

10 the Orange w/ Jetta in the Ghost Tree and Moon Waves  @ the Kessler (Oak Cliff) Weds 11/25/15

Quaker City Night Hawks @ Lola’s (Fort Worth) Weds 11/25/15

I’m going with a tie between these 2 great local shows on Wednesday. I guess you should just catch the one near you.

Top Shows Coming to Town for 11/13/15-11/19/15

Leon’s back, y’all. A hot ticket show. If you’re a bucket lister, you might want to catch #2 or #4, as well. And if you managed to pull a ticket for Leon and for Nathaniel Rateliff, good on ya. Here we go!

1 Leon Bridges w/ Kali Uchis @ Majestic Theatre (Dallas) Sat 11/14/15

Leon himself might not agree with being ahead of the next one, but this has been a super hot ticket, as Fort Worth’s native son makes his return to the Big D amidst his blowed up tour. Probably the last time he plays a venue this size in DFW for a while.

2 Gladys Knight and the O’Jays @ Verizon Theatre (Grand Prairie) Sun 11/15/15

This should be a cool show. If I had known about it earlier, and wasn’t going to Leon the night before, I might have bit on this.

3 Chance the Rapper @ South Side Ballroom (Dallas) Fri 11/13/15

One of the hottest rappers in the game right now. Out of Chicago, the 22 year old recorded his first mixtape 10 Day while serving a 10 day suspension in high school. Then, he blew up with his 2nd mixtape, the critically acclaimed Acid Rap.

4 Merle Haggard @ Gas Monkey Live (Dallas) Sun 11/15/15

One of the last remaining old school country legends. You’re gonna have to make a choice on your bucket list shows.

5 Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats w/ Caroline Rose @ Trees (Deep Ellum) Weds 11/18/15

Like Leon, Nathaniel Rateliff is also a soul singer that’s spent 2015 blowing up. He was a pretty successful folk singer before this new project, but there’s just something different about what he’s doing now.

6 Houndmouth w/ Howard @ Granada Theater (Lower Greenville) Thurs 11/19/15

I really like Houndmouth’s bluesy sound and enjoyed their latest record, even if it didn’t get the best reviews. Howard’s pretty solid too.

7 Israel Nash w/ Jake Paleschic @ Dada Dallas (Deep Ellum) Fri 11/13/15

Israel Nash is a really exciting Alt-Country act to catch live, and he’s performing with one of my favorite local artists, Jake Paleschic.

8 Diana Krall @ Verizon Theatre (Grand Prairie) Sat 11/14/15

This jazz singer was blowing up back when I was a music major. She’s been around a while now (I’m old).

9 Jay Farrar @ the Kessler (Oak Cliff) Sat 11/14/15

Son Volt frontman and former founding member of Alt-Country pioneers Uncle Tupelo, Farrar will be performing Son Volt’s Trace album.

10 Deafheaven @ Trees (Deep Ellum) Sun 11/15/15

One of the few “metal” bands I can tolerate for more than 30 seconds. Their music is often lovely and atmospheric enough that I can ignore that there’s someone in the background fucking growling at me.

Also in town this week: 11/13 the O’s (Album Release Party) w/ Deep Blue Something & Matt Hillyer @ the Kessler, Green River Ordinance w/ Jenny & Tyler @ House of Blues, Keep Shelly in Athens/Different Sleep @ the Foundry, Giada de Laurentiis @ Majestic Theatre, Rat Rios w/ Future Self, a Smile Full of Ale & Ethics @ Rubber Gloves, John Fullbright @ Dan’s Silver Leaf, Mighty Dark to Travel w/ Ben Cosgrove @ Shipping & Receiving, Scotty McCreery @ Billy Bob’s, Keller Williams & EOTO @ Trees, the King Bucks @ Sundown @ Granada, Rise & Shine & Timeline @ Adair’s; Jake Robison Album Release @ Magnolia Motor Lounge 11/14 Health w/ Pictureplane @ Trees, Rebirth Brass Band @ Granada Theater, Lincoln Durham @ the Prophet Bar, Travis Tritt @ Billy Bob’s, Stoney Larue @ House of Blues, Mind Spiders w/ Sealion, Fungi Girls & Slimy Member @ Three Links, Mur w/ Bravo Max! & Mike Graff @ Dada Dallas, Hibou @ the Foundry, Shane Smith w/ Strangetown @ Magnolia, Suicide Girls @ Gas Monkey Live, Wayne “the Train” Hancock @ Gas Monkey Bar n Grill, Petty Theft @ Dan’s Silver Leaf; 11/15 Evanescence @ South Side Ballroom, RAC & Big Data w/ Karl Kling and Filous @ Granada Theater, Kenny Uptain @ Live Oak Roof Top, Jim Heath w/ Revolution Mother, Tiki Bandits & Matt Miller @ Three Links, Little Image w/ NeonNoah & Canvas Bride @ the Prophet Bar, the Fall of Troy w/ Kylesa & Powwers @ the Door; Justin’s Soul Shakedown ft. Josh Weathers, Jake Paleschic, the Hendersons, and Tripp Mathis and the Traitors to benefit the Justin Wade Elliott Scholarship Fund @ Lola’s 11/16 Niykee Heaton @ House of Blues, Hogan & Moss @ Gas Monkey Bar N Grill; 11/17 Plain White T’s w/ Matt McAndrew & Beta Play @ Trees, Circa Survive w/ Rx Bandits & Citizen @ House of Blues, Ratboys w/ Wild Pink, Bedroom Sons & Whimper @ Rubber Gloves, Quaker City Night Hawks @ Lola’s; 11/18 Collective Soul w/ Magnets & Ghosts @ House of Blues, Here We Go Magic w/ Big Thief @ Three Links, 11/19 A Silent Film w/ Flagship @ Dada Dallas, Keegan McInroe w/ Chucho & Jacob Furr @ Lola’s, Rev Run w/ Ruckus @ Gas Monkey Live

Anyways, that’s all for this week, so……

Get out there and see some shows!

Top Shows Coming to Town for 11/6/15-11/12/15

I finally got my concert spreadsheet loaded. Forget you, Pollstar. If I missed something big, let me know. I may have left a venue off of my list.

1 Gogol Bordello w/ Antemasque @ Bomb Factory (Deep Ellum) Sun 11/8/15

These gypsy punks know how to put on a hell of a show, plus At the Drive-in/Mars Volta buddies Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez’s new project, Antemasque, with Travis Barker sitting in on drums.

2 James McMurtry w/ Eric Tessmer Band @ Granada Theater (Lower Greenville) Sat 11/7/15

One of Texas’s greatest songwriters, Larry McMurtry’s son is back in support of critically acclaimed 2015 release (and Album of the Week) A Complicated Game.

3 Cheap Trick w/ Ian Moore & the American Fuse @ Bomb Factory (Deep Ellum) Sat 11/7/15

I want you to want this to be Budokan. *Shrugs* I don’t even know what I’m talking about right now.

4 Heartless Bastards w/ Blue Healer & Gollay @ Shipping & Receiving (Fort Worth) Fri 11/6/15

Erika Wennerstrom and the gang are back with support from Austin’s Blue Healer (Leon Bridges’ favorite band) & local favorite, Gollay.

5 Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear @ the Kessler (Oak Cliff) Fri 11/6/15

Madisen Ward and his mother make some beautiful folk/roots music. “Silent Movies” is one of my favorite tracks of the year. Been getting a few others stuck in my head as I prepare to head out to this show. See you there.

6 Jane’s Addiction @ Gas Monkey (Dallas) Fri 11/6/15

See what Jane has to say when Perry Farrell and the boys hit Big D this weekend.

7 Desaparecidos w/ So So Glos @ Trees (Deep Ellum) Fri 11/6/15

Conor Oberst’s long-separated group has reunited and comes through Dallas with indie darlings, the So So Glos.

Go have some chicken fried steak and go see Zac Brown Band. Sounds like a night to me.

Trevor Powers in all his solemn chillness arrives in Deep Ellum.
