Top Record for the Week of 5/5/15

Last week was a whirlwind and I wasn’t able to get much done on the blog, so here’s the reviews for last week, albeit a little late. I’ll even throw in the one record I scored the last week of April. Better late than never, right? So without further ado;

This week’s top record:

Torres “Sprinter”

Get It On Vinyl

So, some time last year, my wife was somewhat distressed when we went into Kohl’s and the Junior department and the signs were celebrating that 90’s styles were in. Having lived through them, having them “come back” was a bit depressing. And now, it seems I may have spoke too soon declaring it the year of the songwriter. After the last couple months, it seems it’s turning out to be the return of grunge, especially with the females. Already this year, we’ve had some excellent grunge-ish LPs from the likes of Courtney Barnett, Mourn, Chastity Belt, Speedy Ortiz, and Screaming Females, as well as the return of girl rock icons, Sleater-Kinney. Last week saw the return of MacKenzie Scott, AKA Torres, now at her angstiest, with her new LP “Sprinter”. And don’t mistake the earlier statement. MacKenzie Scott, is first and foremost, a songwriter. Even with the grungy-guitar laden new record, Scott still made sure the vocals rang through loudest. She focuses a lot on the lyrics. The record covers a lot of ground for the 24-year old singer, from her childhood, to living in the present, to wondering what the future holds, all while showing a lot of musical versatility. But the main thing you draw musically from the record is the influence of 90’s angst and grunge, a theme that seems to be quite prevalent on the landscape this year. They’re back………
