Top Record for the Week of 4/21/15

Two emerging female indie rock icons dropped their sophomore records this week, and I think they both managed to avoid the sophomore slump.

This week’s top record:

Alabama Shakes “Sound and Color”

Get It On Vinyl

To put in perspective the expectations I had for this album, note that it’s my album of the week, and currently the leader in the clubhouse for album of the month, with only one week left to go, yet I still feel a little disappointed with this release. My dig on the album is actually one of the things it seems to be getting praised for. Brittany Howard has proved herself one of the finest female vocalists of our day, if not one of the all time greats. On Boys and Girls, you could feel every ounce of pain and suffering oozing out of her raspy bluesy vocals. While Sound and Color is still an excellent album that finds the band stepping out in many different directions, touching on soul, R&B, garage, and psych rock, you see Brittany really showing off her vocal chops. She hits some pretty other worldly notes on this record, but for me, it just doesn’t seem to have the full on, grab your attention, emotion of the previous album. The emotion is definitely there. Howard is one of the most emotive vocalists you’ll find, but I guess it just doesn’t feel as dire. Anyways, it’s still a great record from one of my favorite current bands, and I look forward to seeing where they go from here.
