Top Record for the Week of 2/10/15

Sorry, I just couldn’t get inspired to write a post for last week. There are 4 records released this week that rank ahead of my top record for last week, so I’ll just lump in the recommendations from last week in with this week’s picks. This week’s pick is one of the most highly-anticipated records of 2015 so far…..

Father John Misty “I Love You, Honeybear”

Get It On Vinyl

“I Love You, Honeybear” is the follow-up to Josh Tillman’s acclaimed 2012 debut, under the moniker of Father John Misty, “Fear Fun”. Whereas Fear Fun was just a fun album about Josh’s life in Los Angeles, “I Love You, Honeybear” is something wholly different. It touches on the subject of love and intimacy in very delicate and personal ways. Tillman’s record comes off almost too vulnerable. Tillman is a garrulous lyricist. While some songwriters just touch on the details of a story, Tillman just spills out everything he can think of. His songs often have a way of poking fun at himself, and there’s a good amount of humor to the record (he carries this into his live shows, as well), making the record superbly accessible. The music itself is textured and rhythmic, swooning and churning, simple melodies, yet with complex ways about them. This one will probably be near the top at year end.
